On the other side of the bed rail

I sat last night on the other side of the bed rail, clutching my stomach in pain.

The other side of the bed rail is perhaps where a nurse ought never to be.

Especially in the Emergency Room? It’s a scary thing to see.

I can’t say I miss the action — the thrill of being in the field of action.

But I hate that feeling being in the center of it all yet helpless to even proper reaction.

The blood that slightly stained the curtain wall did not give me chills at all;

And the pain in my hypogastric hurt more than the pain from that Gauge 23.

I sat up, laid down, tried turning around. I could not have fallen asleep.

It’s a thought that abides, my reflection incurs, and a solitude waiting to weep;

Because where I am now, though home and afar from the bed rail that put me in place,

Here I am now, while my thoughts not complete, wondering how behind the rail I reside.

And besides that, there is a question I’ve yet to contemplate.

Ang Dating Daan Will Turn 37 in 2017: Here Are Some Things You Need to Know

fb add37 cover

The ‘Ang Dating Daan’program will celebrate its 37th Anniversary with the theme “God’s Word Revealed In Good Works” come December 15, 2017.

Since it first aired on radio in December, 1980, it cannot be denied that it is truly the longest-running religious program on-air in the Philippines for a good 37 years.

True to its theme, its avid supporters and followers can expect its many charitable works to continue and initiated even on the peak of this celebration.

Massive Public Service Charities

One of the main activities to mark the celebration will be a nationwide medical mission. Together with UNTV News and Rescue Channel and Clinic Ni Kuya, Ang Dating Daan will spearhead massive medical mission spread across different parts of the Philippines.

Members of the congregation, Members Church of God International, or the Ang Dating Daan Group will join the various charitable endeavors, such as the Libreng Sakay or free bus rides.

Just like last year, we can look forward to a well-supported event from the MCGI congregation, coming from different locations all over the globe.

UNTV News and Rescue, the home channel of ‘Ang Dating Daan’ and its other productions for over a decade, will present a special program about the Ang Dating Daan 37-year Anniversary on December 15, 2017.

There will also be a Live Worldwide Bible Exposition to be hosted by none other than Bro. Eli Soriano, co-hosted by Bro. Daniel Razon, in the evening that will start at 7PM.

Through the Year: Bible Exposition and Debates

Ang Dating Daan started in radio broadcasting before going into many Filipino household’s television screens in 1983 on IBC Channel 13. Since then, the program has extended its airing through to a much-wider audience through satellite technology.

Ang Dating Daan or The Old Path is translated in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese. The program itself has been hosted in different languages in different parts of the world.

Visit the Ang Dating Daan website to watch episodes of the program, and for live updates.

In Latin America where Ang Dating Daan has a counterpart programs for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking locals there, the audience reach of the program has indeed increased. Bro. Eli hosts El Camino Antiguo and O Caminho Antigo, in Spanish and Portuguese, respectively.

Just how Bro. Eli hosts his live Bible Expositions and conducts religious debates in the Philippines, the same fervor and passion in preaching and defending the truth are evident of the preacher even in faraway lands like Brazil and other parts of Latin America.

As an example, last November 5, 2017, a debate was held between Bro. Eli Soriano and Brazilian Pastor Douglas Jessé Rocha of Igreja do Evangelho Quadrangular (Church of the Foursquare Gospel).

The debate, which was in Portuguese, was streamed live on Facebook and Youtube, along with live translations in different languages. (Read: Peaceful Debate: International Filipino-Televangelist Bro. Eli Soriano vs. Brazilian Pastor)

In this part of the globe, Bro. Eli conducts Live Bible Expositions almost every Sunday morning Brazil time (EST).

Through these efforts, the evangelization of Ang Dating Daan continue to extend to other parts of the globe and inspire people, not only in undertaking good works, but most importantly, through preaching the pure doctrines of Christ in the Bible.

Ang Dating Daan has an archive of the Q&A videos, which are readily available on their website and Youtube channel.

Ang Dating Daan adds the Truth Channel on digital TV where it airs its programming, apart from UNTV and Radio La Verdad.

Doing Charity for 37 Years

The word of God is truly reflected in our actions towards others, in that, as the Bible states: “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10)”

One of the biggest beneficiaries of the efforts of Ang Dating Daan through International Televangelist Bro. Eli Soriano and Public Service Advocate Kuya Daniel Razon are the scholars of the La Verdad Christian College.

La Verdad makes sure that the scholars of this school will only mind attending classes and making good grades. Ang Dating Daan’s Bro. Eli and Kuya Daniel shoulder the tuition fees, books, school uniforms, miscellaneous fees, free lunch of the students, and other expenses.

With two campuses in Pampanga and Caloocan, La Verdad accept interested youth, regardless of their race, culture, gender or religion.

Apart from the free education program, Ang Dating Daan has been one of the biggest supporters of the benefit concert “Songs For Heroes”, which pay tribute and give financial aid to the families of the police force and soldiers who serve this country.

With support from UNTV News and Rescue, the “Songs for Heroes III: Songs For Marawi Heroes” was held to commemorate the liberation of Marawi while paying tribute to those who have died while performing their duties.

Families of those who fought in Marawi each received 50,000php.

Re: “Bes, may giyera ba sa Mindanao?”

An exceptional read.

Mindanao, despite what media makes it to look like, is far from it. Therese Ty especially identifies that this.

Reading this, if you are Filipino, though not from Mindanao, you may understand something similar from your own perspective since we are also a nation of diversity.

We should be proud of our heritage, our diversity but more importantly, of each other. Mindanaoans are no exception.

I too recall quite laughable the reactions of people to whom I’ve told that I grew up in Zamboanga City. This is an exceptional read indeed. Thanks for this, Therese Ty. Good luck!

I am Mindanao: PeaceSkwela

By Anne Therese Ty,  Essay writing finalist

This is the question I always get from my acquaintances here in Manila whenever I tell them that I come from Mindanao. Some people ask this question in an offensive tone, others, in a genuinely curious tone. My reaction depends on the tone used by people to ask me the question, but one thing is constant, and that is, I see to it to keep my cool when answering the question. That, is the first step, to showing that Mindanao is not the conflict-ridden place that the headlines seem it to be.

Answering that question aggressively, even when it is asked to you in a merely curious manner, would just defeat the purpose of proving that Mindanao is not what the headlines make it to be. It is understandable for us Mindanaons, to feel frustration whenever that question is posed to us. Wanting…

Of You

Do not, I beg, you look at me.

Do not even STARE.

Of you I shall not utter,

Not ONE, a solemn dare.

Of you I shall not write about,

Of you, of whom I care.

Of you I try to think aloud

In quiet abyss stare.

Of you did countless nights go by

From whence my future waning;

Of you did stars refuse to shine,

For I’d detest their glory.

Of you, a love not known to last,

Dither WHERE I’m at.

Of you my heart doth beats a lot;

BUT I shan’t heed nor hearken.

This odd non-oath, not sworn nor spoken,

Of you, for which, such is forgotten,

It speaks to me in tell-tale mystery

A song in which a certain misery.

For there, a kingdom long forgotten,

Reigned no servant to mortal infatuation;

Lest the mortal reigned,

And lest a mortal heart was queen!

The Universe As The Metaphor

“What if ‘God’ is a metaphor for the universe?”

I no longer recall the first instance I had seen the question above. It is but a rhetoric statement.

Browsing through Pinterest one Sunday morning, I saw the statement again.

The user who uploaded the image puts forward a very interesting follow-up to the question. The caption read: “What if God is a metaphor for the universe and we really are created in its image?”

In his question, the user above referred to the Bible verse in the book of Genesis 1:27 which reads, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” (King James Version)

However, the user’s intention in asking the question seemed inclined to explaining how man came to believe in God, with the assumption that the latter is not so.

Merriam Webster Online defines “Metaphor” as a figure of speech. So, to say that God is merely a metaphor is to say that the existence of the Universe supersedes the existence of God, and wrests that God’s existence might be arguable.

Most atheists consider Him nonexistent. Others even, meaningless.

But in truth, that is not the case. The respectable television preacher Bro. Eli puts it that the law of nature does not exist on its own but has a Creator who ‘predetermines’ it. That said, the Creator who is the God Almighty, cannot be meaningless.

A Huge Misunderstanding

Bro. Eli Soriano, host of the longest-running religious program on Philippine Television and Overall Servant of Members Church of God International (MCGI), is a strong contester of atheism.

In his blog, Creation: The Most Misunderstood Portion of Genesishe expounded on the many misinterpretations and mistaken theories of our origin and the universe itself.

“Real science believes in beginnings. Real science believes that there is an earth, a planet. Real science believes in the expanse that envelopes the earth and other heavenly bodies they call “space” which the Bible calls “heavens.”

– Bro. Eli Soriano, ‘Creation: Most Misunderstood Portion of Genesis

(Originally posted on Elisoriano.com/blog 22 November 2014)

The televangelist-blogger believes that the Bible and true science do not contradict, and that it is the interpreters of the Bible who make statements that contradict true science.

In this blog, he brought up Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary biologist and atheist who believes in the theory of evolution and wrote that it is necessary for man to return to the sea as have ‘a good number of thorough-going land animals.’

But the account of creation in Genesis has a very scientific chronology proving that marine life came first before land life. How? “A day in creation is not a 24-hour day as other Bible apologist claim!” wrote Bro. Eli.

Even if human science is considered as true science by many people because of supporting empirical factual observations, while natural sciences are backed by rational theorizing, as according to Michael Dunn (The Human Sciences, 2013),  Bro. Eli explained that they are still just theories!

“To qualify, not everything in the Bible is considered a mystery. The Bible contains information worded in simple words understandable even by the most illiterate of humans. Honor and obey a father and a mother can be understood even by a child.” quipped Bro. Eli.

Bro. Eli also put forth the biblical claim that man cannot know everything of God. How so? Over 95% of the ocean remains unexplored to date, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Bro. Eli did say that God reserves some knowledge to Himself, and this is both biblical and factual.

“Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.” Ecclesiastes 8:17 (KJV)

The Scientific and Biblical Existence

“I have found there is a wonderful harmony in the complementary truths of science and faith.”

Collins: Why this scientist believes in God by Dr. Francis S. Collins, MD, PHD, author of “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief”

During one of our Thanksgiving Celebrations at Members Church of God International (MCGI), Bro. Eli featured this article written by Dr. Collins whose perception in life changed dramatically as he discovered the magnificence which is in God’s great and very scientific creation of the universe.

There are many scientists today who attest to atheism, but the claim that 99% of the world’s scientists are atheist is truly misleading.

Such was a statement of Jeremy Lucban, the atheist who defamed the televangelist largely on social media, a blind follower of Dawkins and the long-held atheistic theory that men come from apes.

There is much to disprove the atheistic claims and the theory of evolution itself! Even mitochondrial DNA is proven to have originated from a single mother – human, not ape.

mcx-lucban_age-confirmed-for-eve-mother-of-all-humans

Unlike Lucban, the more Collins learned in science and of the deep wonders in the world, the more it was likely to him that God exists.

This is the logical concept. As every action has an equal and opposite reaction, the universe cannot in itself exist. For what force was there to create the hypothetical friction in the hypothetical pea-sized dense matter from which the ‘Big Bang’ started?

Bro. Eli was appalled by the fact that people can believe such a theory and fallacy to be truth in order to support the notion that there is no God.

“It is possible to ignore the existence of a Creator but it is impossible to obliterate that existence, even if one believes in such non-existence. It is upon the existence of a Creator that we can even think of possibilities of how the world was created.”

– Bro. Eli Soriano, More Possibilities than Impossibilities – God is in Control, not Atheist

Even theoretical physicist Michio Kaku was quoted to say, “I have concluded that we are in a world made by rules created by an intelligence.”

Kaku, a professor who has published over 70 articles for physics journals rocked the world of science – or should I say the world of atheistic scientists – when he was quoted saying this by the Geophilosophical Association of Anthropological and Cultural Studies, adding, “To me it is clear that we exist in a plan which is governed by rules that were created, shaped by a universal intelligence and not by chance.” (See video)

Truly there is need of a Creator to sustain this vast mathematical expanse.

And therefore, in entirety, the entity of God is not simply an idea created to explain the universe, but rather, it is the universe and all that God created which is proof of His existence, power and greatness.

As the international televangelist says, “Nothing in science tells us that there is no Creator.”

Nothing is lost in believing.

Take our universe as the metaphor.

A Dream

How are you?

This is a question. This is the question.

How. Are. You.
How have you been? The years pass on, and I, my own, is a lost dream.
Good morning. Good evening. Good riddance. Good bye.
I hoped to fake a lie, and complicate the already complicated.
You were a dream I had. A fantasy in writing. A fiction from a novel. A neverending pause.

How real is a dream, and how vivid can it be? It was there, and it was not;

And we were here but now we’re not.
And how are you, my friend? How I’ve longed to know.
The words we left unspoken brought tears that were forgotten. Yet the answer did lie in what was written – an archived crusade that rotted.
My! The years passed. The shame once cruel to one, yet today, a single question, a single thought – a memory and a clause.
It is our story left unwritten…

For which sake the past forgiven.
And I think, and I wonder, and I know now what a blunder

If I had let it tarry on whilst knowing me, and knowing you.
You can’t, i say, you can’t.

And I? I shan’t forget.
I write this here today in memory. The memory of a dream.
